Hendrix tops rock riff poll

Hendrix: Number one

Hendrix: Number one

Jimi Hendrix’s Voodoo Child (Slight Return) is the best guitar riff in rock’n’roll history, according to readers of the Music Radar website.

Hundreds of people voted in the poll to make the site’s Riff Week celebrations, and a Top 50 has been compiled. Music Radar says: “Whole careers have been built on killer guitar riffs – but what the hell is a riff anyway? Most definitions are along these lines: ‘A short rhythmic music phrase which may be repeated often during a piece.’

“From its wah-wah into the the rhythm parts and the astonishing solo, this is still regarded by many as the high watermark of electric guitar expression.”
