Man charged with arson in Def Leppard concert fire

Perhaps he was paying homage to Def Leppard’s “Pyromania” album.

A Logan man thrown out of a Def Leppard concert in August was charged Tuesday with arson for allegedly setting fire to dry grass surrounding West Valley City’s USANA Amphitheatre.

The 28-year-old man was charged in 3rd District Court with third-degree felony arson, criminal trespassing, a class B misdemeanor, and intoxication, a class C misdemeanor, in the Aug. 25 blaze.

Witnesses told police they observed the man setting ablaze uncut dry grass on a hillside near USANA, according to court papers.

About 15,000 people attended the concert and parking lots were full of vehicles, some of which were near the grass, charges state. If the fire had spread, it could have created serious safety risks.

When police caught up with the man, security for USANA informed them that the man had been kicked out of the concert for being drunk and unruly. The fire did not cause significant damage.

The man is out of jail after posting $10,000 bail.
